VIENNA - Scientists have made the UN meeting in Vienna, Austria, which revealed a large asteroid that will likely pose a threat to planet Earth in the
decades to come.
This asteroid known as the "2011 AG5", a code name that became one of the agenda of the UN Committee Scientific and Technical divisions.
Researchers say that some asteroids have a diameter the size of the 460-foot (approximately 138 meters) which is expected to hit the planet Earth in the year 2040.
"2011 AG5 is the object that currently has the highest chance of an impact on the planet Earth in the year 2040. However, we only watched for about half an orbit, so that our confidence in these calculations are still not very high," said Detlef Koschny of the European Space Agency in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, as quoted by Space Daily, Wednesday (29/02/2012).
Donald Yeomans, head of the Near-Earth Object Observations Program NASA said the asteroid is expected this will have likely impact on the planet Earth with a percentage or a ratio of small numbers.
It was reported that the impact will be felt the planet Earth is predicted to occur on February 5, 2040.
"Fortunately, this object will be observed further in the interval 2013 to 2016, and 'scenarios' about the possible impacts can be reduced. There is still time to launch a mission 'bend' the object is to change its speed" he added.
